As baby boomers approach retirement age, the skilled workforce will begin to take a hit. New Bedford Chief Executive Sally Powell says the industry should take on more workers from minority groups to fill the void. "This is the first year boomers turn 65 so we will have a large group of skilled people leaving the workforce," Powell says.

Apprentice Cameron Clark is shaping his own future as well as the city's skyline. Mr Clark, 18, of Pooraka, started a construction apprenticeship with McMahon Services in June. He said working on major building projects across SA, such as the new Harris Scarfe building in Rundle Mall, was a dream come true.

After nine years with the organisation, Sally will begin her new role following the retirement of highly-respected outgoing Chief Executive Max Dyason. Bedford will be celebrate the opening of three brand new homes at Lightsview with residents, their families and Minister for Families and Communities Jennifer Rankine on 28 June as part of the “Homes for 100” programme.
This project is a joint venture between Bedford and the State Government which fulfils a policy direction to de-centralise care for people with disability and encourage greater social inclusion.
Bedford’s ICAN programme a success with Riverland youth

Skateboard art and cooking for the homeless are just some of the innovative new learning activities assisting Riverland youth with a disadvantage to realise their potential.
For the past 12 months, 40 young people from Berri, Waikerie, Loxton and Renmark schools have been involved in Bedford’s ICAN-FLO programme (Innovative Community Action Network - Flexible Learning Options), an initiative to provide alternative learning for 12-19-year olds who are disengaged or at risk of disengaging from the education system.

After a three year struggle with depression and anxiety, Sammie - a trained hairdresser - was unemployed and battling to cope with one of the toughest times in her life. It was at her lowest that Sammie was referred to Bedford's 'Abilities for All' programme - a moment which she describes as a "turning point in her life".
