Dale's APG Pathway from Supported Employment to Supervisor
In October 2001, Dale started his career with APG, Bedford’s garden maintenance business. Dale has been committed to delivering outstanding garden maintenance services to a variety of commercial customers in Adelaide’s south.
We are delighted to announce that Dale has been promoted to a supervisor role, on full award wages, becoming the first supported employee in 24 years to do so. Dale’s promotion to supervisor sends a powerful message that, with the right support, people with disability can break down barriers and achieve leadership roles.
Personal Growth and Ambition: The Grounds for Success
Dale’s journey from supported employment to a supervisory role is not just a personal success story—it is a reflection of his hard work, determination, and the inclusive opportunities offered by Bedford. For Dale, this promotion is a testament to his growth and ambition.
“I’ve always wanted to improve myself and try something new. I applied for the supervisor role because I wanted to learn more and help my team grow. It’s about supporting everyone and working together to do our best.”

Economic and Social Benefits of the Transition
Dale's transition from supported employment and the Disability Support Pension, to open employment at full award wages, represents a significant shift not only in his career but also in his social and economic wellbeing.
One of the primary advantages of moving from supported employment to open employment is the financial independence it offers. People in supported employment receive financial assistance through government programs such as the Disability Support Pension. However, when people like Dale step into open employment, they begin to earn full award wages, providing them with increased economic freedom.
Support from APG’s Team and Supervisors
Dale’s success is not just a result of his personal determination but also the encouragement and support he received from his colleagues and manager at APG. Mitch Lowe, APG South Operations Manager, was thrilled when he learned that Dale had applied for the role. “I was really excited when Dale put in for the role,” Mitch recalls. “It’s not just about the job; it’s about his growth. I’ve seen how hard he’s worked over the years, and I knew this was a big moment for him. When the team found out, they all cheered for him. Dale has earned this, and I’m proud to see him step into this new role.”
The supportive culture at APG is one of the reasons Dale was able to move into a leadership position. The team’s encouragement and camaraderie played a key role in helping him succeed and advance in his career.
Dale’s Passion for Garden Maintenance
Dale is not only passionate about his career but also deeply enjoys the work he does. After two decades in garden maintenance, he still finds joy in the outdoors. “I love being outside in the fresh air,” Dale says. “It’s great to be active and do something that helps the community. Working in the garden, seeing how everything grows—it feels rewarding. Now, as a supervisor, I can help others in their garden maintenance careers, and that’s really exciting.”
Dale’s dedication to his work and the satisfaction he finds in it are central to his success. His positive attitude and hard work have earned him respect within the team and have contributed to the exceptional quality of the work at APG.
A Warm Congratulations from APG Ambassador
Kim Syrus, APG Ambassador, visited Dale on site at Tonsley Village, where APG meticulously maintains the communal garden areas on behalf of City Of Marion and Peet Limited.
“I couldn’t be happier for Dale. The gardens at Tonsley Village look immaculate, and it’s clear that the team here takes great pride in their work. Dale’s promotion is a huge achievement, and it speaks to the quality of his work and his dedication. It’s wonderful to see people like Dale progress in their careers and contribute even more to their teams.”
