Meet Kimberley, the only woman in the Adelaide Hills maintenance team of our landscape construction social enterprise, GreenInc.
Each morning, when Kimberley laces up her safety boots and picks up her brush cutter, she’s doing more than caring for Adelaide’s landscapes — she is building confidence, breaking stereotypes, and showing that women belong in every part of the workforce.
Kimberley is demonstrating how Bedford’s social enterprise model creates inclusive opportunities that empower individuals to break new ground- on job sites and in workplace culture.
A Role That Aligns with Passion and Purpose
For Kimberley, the outdoors has always felt like home.
"I love being out in nature," she says. "No two days are the same. One day I might be mowing a reserve, the next I'm brush cutting near new housing estates. I love that I’m always seeing new places—and that I’m not stuck inside."
After searching for hands-on, physical work that suited her interests, Kimberley found GreenInc, Bedford’s landscape construction and maintenance social enterprise. Through this pathway, she has not only secured consistent employment, but joined a team that supports her to grow and thrive.
Pioneering Inclusive Employment in the Adelaide Hills
Backed by Bedford, GreenInc delivers high-quality landscape construction and maintenance services across Adelaide and regional South Australia. Kimberley’s team maintains parks, reserves, and public spaces in several new and established developments throughout the Adelaide Hills.
Whether she’s mowing, brush cutting, spraying, or removing weeds and rubbish, Kimberley plays an integral role in keeping community green spaces clean, safe, and enjoyable for residents. Being the only woman on her team hasn’t been a barrier—in fact, it’s something Kimberley takes pride in.
"The guys are really respectful and supportive. There’s no judgement—we all do the same work and help each other out," she says with a smile.
Removing Barriers and Building Futures
At Bedford, we know that opportunity means more than a job title—it means the right support at the right time. When Kimberley joined GreenInc, she did not have a White Card, which is required for working safely on construction and maintenance sites.
Thanks to Bedford’s commitment to training and development, Kimberley was able to complete her certification with full support, removing a major barrier and opening new pathways for her future.
A Culture of Respect and Belonging
Kimberley says it’s the team culture that truly sets GreenInc and Bedford apart.
“We check in with each other. If I ever have a question or need help, someone’s there to listen. I’ve never felt left out or like I wasn’t good enough. It’s a really good place to work.”
Her supervisor and team members agree that Kimberley is reliable, focused, and always ready to take on any task, from clearing overgrown parkland to restoring garden beds.
A Job That Makes a Difference
Through GreenInc, Bedford is redefining what social enterprise employment looks like—empowering people to gain skills, earn income, and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways.
"I feel proud of the work I do,” Kimberley says. “We help people enjoy their neighbourhoods and that feels really good."
Growing Inclusion from the Ground Up
As GreenInc operations continue to expand across the Adelaide Hills, so too does the impact. Every person we support—like Kimberley—demonstrates how inclusive employment can cultivate not only greener landscapes, but stronger, more connected communities.
