We support people with disability to discover their passions, expand knowledge, build skills and create moments that matter through our Learning and Experiences programs.
Meet Darcy, from our Mount Gambier hub, who recently rediscovered his love of painting through our Learning and Experiences Arts Program. For Darcy, what began as a creative outlet soon blossomed into something truly meaningful.
Last year, Darcy gifted a beautiful watercolour painting of the Mount Gambier Library as a heartfelt thank you for the opportunity to exhibit Bedford clients’ artwork during the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival. The beautiful artwork, which captured the spirit and charm of the library, was presented in a touching moment of gratitude, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed it.
Impressed by the piece, the team at the Mount Gambier Library asked Darcy for permission to reproduce his painting on thank you cards, to be shared with visiting authors and notable guests. His artwork now plays an ongoing role in celebrating storytelling, connection and creativity within the local community.
“I was really wanting to be able to put Darcy’s artwork somewhere that more people can see. It’s an incredibly fitting tribute to the library and our community, making it a perfect opportunity for the artwork to be enjoyed by a wider audience.”
“Over his life, Darcy has painted here and there but, since joining Bedford Learning and Experiences, he has started to really enjoy it again. It is a true milestone to have his artwork displayed at the library and be a part of something special.”
Bedford’s Mount Gambier Learning and Experiences Manager, Sarah Shepherd, shared how proud the team is of Darcy’s achievement. She described his artwork as a powerful example of the possibilities when people are given the right support to explore their talents.
Sarah emphasised that Darcy’s gift to the Mount Gambier Library is not only a celebration of his creativity but also a meaningful contribution that will continue to bring joy to the community.
We are also excited to share that Darcy and other talented artists from our Mt Gambier Learning and Experiences hub will once again be showcasing their work at the library during the 2025 SALA Exhibition this August.
Celebrating Creativity Through Our Learning and Experiences Arts Programs
Darcy’s story is just one example of the possibilities through our Learning and Experiences Arts Programs. These programs are designed to nurture self-expression, build confidence and empower people with disability to create, perform and proudly share their talents. We offer a wide range of creative experiences, from painting and performance to music, dance and much more.
Our Learning and Experiences programs are available at seven hubs across metro Adelaide and regional South Australia, including Mount Gambier. These hubs offer a broad range of activities and experiences from the arts to life skills, outdoor adventures and social engagement, designed to help people with disability to live the life they choose.
We are proud to foster spaces where creativity builds confidence, sparks connection and strengthens the community.
