At Bedford Learning and Experiences, every activity is designed to help clients develop practical skills and meaningful connections. Recently, two clients, Tanya and Shane, had the chance to put their teamwork and creativity to the test by making an orange cake using fresh oranges grown right on site at the Panorama Learning and Experiences hub.
A Hands-On Learning Experience
The duo set out to make a fresh orange cake starting by practising the essential hygiene skills of washing their hands.
They then gathered the ingredients listed in the recipe: flour, sugar, butter, eggs, and, of course, freshly squeezed orange juice and zest. Every step in the process offered opportunities to develop practical skills for life. Measuring flour and sugar helped reinforce numeracy and focus, while cracking eggs and squeezing oranges involved careful hand movements and fine-motor coordination.
Mixing the batter encouraged focus, coordination and patience, while grating the orange zest released a citrus aroma that filled the kitchen, making the activity a true sensory experience.
Along the way, Tanya and Shane practised following instructions using visual aids, managed their time as the cake baked, and worked together by sharing tools and supporting each other.
By the time the warm cake came out of the oven, they had not only created something delicious but also strengthened their independence, confidence and teamwork skills.
Teamwork and Connection
Baking together became more than just a fun activity - it was an opportunity for collaboration and shared learning as well. Tanya and Shane practised taking turns, offering help, and sharing tools respectfully, building confidence and fostering a sense of achievement.
Through this shared experience, they strengthened not only their practical skills but also their connection with one another which is a key focus of the Learning and Experiences program. These small but important interactions helped them build confidence in their abilities and fostered a real sense of achievement as they worked toward a common goal. By working side by side, Tanya and Shane strengthened their teamwork, strengthened their sense of belonging, and demonstrated the value of supporting one another.
A Rewarding Outcome
This activity highlights how Bedford Panorama supports clients to develop independence, confidence, and everyday skills, while nurturing meaningful relationships in a supportive environment.
